The Cricketeer by VagabondX The Cricketeer by VagabondX
I've been seeing lots of crickets around lately. They are one of the few insects that don't give me the creeps and I thought, "Why are there no cricket superheroes?" Probably because the cricket can't do anything much on the cool side. Doesn't climb walls, shoot webs etc. But MAN can those little things JUMP! This guy, The Cricketeer, can jump like a mile when he really has to. He has slightly tougher skin than most humans. About as tough as plywood maybe. Seemed like the right toughness to be in proportion to a carapace. He can also tell what the weather is going to do before it happens...hm, there's his alter ego right there. TV weatherman! I don't know if thats a real ability of the insect but there are rumors about it. And he can produce a loud chirping noise that can stun bad guys. Or annoy coworkers. Whichever is needed. Although, if he did it around his coworkers it would defeat the whole secret identity thing so scratch that. Oh yeah, he can communicate with real crickets.

Not an epic hero but a fun one.

I agree with you Vagabondx, we need different bug heroes. Spiders get all the glory.

Oh yeah, I definitely envisioned him as more of a funny hero than a serious one. I doubt a hero with a cricket motif could ever be taken seriously.

You are having a ball! THIS is what I feel the essence of a cartoonist/comic-book artist should be: just grab ANYTHING, and make something out of it! Just look at the WWII era characters! GREAT stuff!

Im sure some one already made this comment, but if they continued the Tick series either cartoon or comics which i haven't ever really researched this would be a great character add.
again awesome work man

Whats funny is, in the comic, there appeared another duo similar to The Tick and Arthur called The Flea and Doyle. Doyle was almost a doppelganger of Arthur but in a black outfit of which the wings looked like those of a monarch butterfly. Very similar in appearance to the Cricketeer.

Now this is a hell of a concept. A kind of marginal, second-rate sort of superhero, but what potential. And there's no reason he couldn't be great. I mean look at Animal Man!
Great picture, and I envy your simple but innovative concept.

A cricket's legs are also very strong. He might have some really cool form of kick-box fighting or a dance-like martial art. Crickets in many asian countries are considered embodiments of good luck and good fortune.

Another "kickin'" cool superhero! ;)

Hm, I thought of him being able to jump far and using that leg strength to sort of jump off of walls and barrel into bad guys but the kickboxing/martial arts angle is a great idea! Something like that savate style like Batroc uses in the marvel universe.

Wooo... I absolutely love the character design and the idea.
We actually get crickets in our house every fall... the numbers will probably fall though since we now have a cat.

Their everywhere here right now. Lots at work and this one gas station I stop at especially. Its horrible because they must spray for them or something because at the gas station there are dead ones everywhere. Makes me sad.

Actually it was sort of a rhetorical question... but I'm sure there are people who care about what you think. Art is an extension of thought and if nobody cared about what you thought nobody would look at your art (Ah hell... sorry. I'm bad at encouragement).

Yeah, I apologize. After I sent that I thought to myself, "Crap, I don't know if that meant what it seemed." Dangers of not being able to hear voice inflections.
